The Cloak of Rane
Set in a world called Maether, this middle-grade fantasy follows 14-year-old Linn in her quest to save her world from the machinations of the demon Rane. A prophecy has identified Linn as the “Hidden Arrow,” Rane’s nemesis.

Taught his own ancient religion by her dead father, Linn worships Maether’s creator, the Great One. Sixty “lysefolk” serve in hiding as high priests, each wielding a gift to keep the world in balance. The Great One has secreted fifteen mysterious “skjolder” throughout Maether to guard it against Rane. No one knows what these skjolder look like or even what their nature is, much less where they are. The lysefolk only know a Ranite rumor: just two skjolder remain. The destruction of the other thirteen explains why the lysefolk’s gifts have weakened and why new lysefolk no longer arise to replace the dead. Soon all Maether will belong to Rane.

And now a lyse has uncovered a Ranite plot in the city of Sand: they are about to track and destroy one of these last two skjolder. The Ranites only wait for the moon to wax full.

Along with three other lysefolk, Linn braves the terrors of the wild winter sea to travel to Sand. There she hopes to use her pathfinding gift to find and protect the endangered skjold. But before the lysefolk can carry out their plan, the Ranites uncover their presence and capture two of them. Utterly alone, bereft of money, supplies, and with no idea what happened to her companions, Linn fears the worst.

And her fear is justified. After reuniting with old friend Gee, they discover that Gee’s father Tarkin is leading the Ranites and intends to sacrifice the two lysefolk to Rane. Linn pleads for Gee’s help, and he agrees. But there is a proviso. His first priority lies with his father, in saving him from Rane. All else comes second. With no choice but to rely on this shaky partnership, Linn uses her gift to lead them both into Ranite territory and the very presence of Rane himself.
