Mythology
Maether is not a globe like Earth. Instead, it is a floating world that rides atop the depths of the sea. That is one reason why the Midwaters are so turbulent. Truen myth has it that the Great One created Maether inside his cup and the Maethern seas are his drink. The depths of the seas are the source of Maether’s life and safety.

Maer is an ancient Maethern hero. He is famous for standing up to Rane and choosing to die rather than betray the Great One. The Great One blessed the water of the lake in which Maer perished, and it became a refuge and blessed spot. Over the years, as the power of the lysefolk lessened, the location of Maer’s Lake was lost. And that left Maether open to danger.

The lysefolk were created as guardians of the skills and resources given to Maether by the Great One. They do this by practicing their crafts and tending the resources. There is something about their actions which gives strength to the whole world of Maether. They take the idea of their special area of gifting and make it real in this way. Their companion animals are just that: companions that support and strengthen the lysefolk they befriend, and thus the work the lysefolk do.

The skjolder, which on the surface resemble trees but are actually live beings (albeit ones that don’t speak, communicate in the usual way, or move), are also guardians of Maether. Their role is bringing the depths of the Maethern seas up through their roots and dispersing that source of life and safety into the heavens above Maether.
